| Irish Set Dances are danced with four couples in a square. A "set" includes as many as 7 different figures (each figure is a dance all to their own.) Thus, the name SET dance - it's a set of dances! When you step out on the set dance floor be prepared to dance ALL the figures in a given set. Dancers weave through intricate patterns with maneuvers like: lead around, house, body, dance at home, swing, and chain. The names of the set dances will typically hint at what region of Ireland they originated from, like the West Kerry Set or Aran Set. Set dances are faster paced than ceili dances, and are highly energetic and fun. We are thrilled to have the dances called and taught by Barry and Pat Callahan. The music will be provided by Devine's Diner, a freewheeling ensemble of some of New England's finest Irish traditional musicians. Headed up by Providence fiddler, Jimmy Devine, the band's menu constantly expands to include noted area musicians. Jimmy is an original member of the popular Celtic-fusion band The Erinoids, and he helped found the Providence Ceili Club Band. He is joined by daughter Hannah Devine on fiddle, Theodora Scobi on piano and flute. |
