with Armand Aromin (for beginner adults and teens)
UPDATED 01/01/19 – This class will be rescheduled for April, 2019. Email email@example.com to express interest in a future session. Armand will also be teaching uke classes in February-March, 2019.
A six-week class in beginner Sean-nós dance with instructor Armand Aromin will be held on Wednesdays, Sept. 26, Oct. 3, Oct. 17, Oct. 24, Nov. 7, and Nov. 14, from 7:45-8:45 p.m. This class is designed for total beginner adults and teens. Minimum of 6 students needed to hold class. Fee for the six-week class is $100. Note: Please wear comfortable clothing and footwear and bring a water bottle and either a notebook or a video recorder. The ideal sean-nós shoes have leather soles, but sneakers are OK too. Prepayment necessary!
Sean-nós, Irish for "old way," this style of dance is percussive in nature, improvisatory, and pre-dates today's modern Irish step dancing that many are familiar with. The footwork remains close to the floor and the upper body is relaxed. In this beginner class, you'll learn basic steps to familiarize yourself with the vocabulary and focus on dancing the tune, rather than having a set routine. It's all about a conversation between the dancer and musician after all!
Armand Aromin is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, dancer, and violin maker who strongly believes in discovering one's local musical history. His Providence-based duo, The Vox Hunters, have just published their first book of old music from Rhode Island entitled The Ocean State Songster, volume I.
So we can be assured of meeting the minimum needed to hold any of our class offerings, BRT NEEDS PRE-PAYMENT AT LEAST 3 DAYS BEFORE THE START OF ANY CLASS (and hopefully sooner!) or we'll need to cancel at that time.
